Ceramic Huaco Representation Portrait Two Birds

Replica of a sculptural ceramic vessel (Huaco) that represents a head, also known as a “huaco portrait”. The facial features of the character have been achieved in great detail, as well as the representation of the hair arrangement and body adornments such as the headdress, the turban and decorative elements such as feathers, bird heads and geometric designs. Studies of large assemblages of these sculptural ceramic vessels (Huaco) indicate that those represented would have been members of the ruling elite, priests, warriors, and prominent artisans. Some were even represented at various times in their lives. Most of the huacos portraits are ceramic vessels (Huaco) s with the characteristic bow-shaped handle, which fulfilled funerary functions. Rafael Larco Hoyle indicates that a replica of the first piece in his collection, which was given to him by his father, Rafael Larco Herrera. (UH)
